Yakarta, alive – Commission XII of the Indonesian Parliament confirmed the need for a comprehensive evaluation of the granting of mining permits in Raja ampat, southwest Papua. This was done to guarantee the sustainability and sustainability of the environment.

Member of the Commission of the Chamber of Representatives XII Alfons Manibu said that there was a need for space for the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) and the Ministry of Environment (KLH) to carry out a comprehensive and objective evaluation related to the granting of mining permits that had an impact on the Raja AMPAT region.

“It is necessary to have space for the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and KLH to carry out an exhaustive and objective evaluation,” he said in a statement in Yakarta, on Saturday, June 7, 2025.

He also emphasized, supporting the steps of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, by temporarily suspending the activities of the Nickel PT Gag Nickel Nickel Operations in Gag Island, Raja Amppp, as a form of response to the aspirations of the community and the commitment to preserve the environment.

“The decree of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources responds to the aspirations of the community and preserves the Raja Amppat environment,” said the DPR member of the Electoral District of Western Papua.

Meanwhile, it was carried out after the complaints of the residents. The Government evaluates that there is the possibility that the company’s activities have not met the technical and environmental requirements, so it must be verified more before operating again.

As a member of the Commission of the House of Representatives, XII in charge of the energy sector, mineral resources, the environment and investment Alfons said their party was examining all the aspirations and complaints related to alleged environmental damage due to nickel mining operations in Raja Ampat.

The aspiration was expressed by several elements of society, environmental activists, traditional leaders, to the people of Papua in general.

All these reports will certainly be a special concern of the Commission of the Chamber of Representatives XII of the Indonesian Parliament and will be explored more thoroughly in the period of judgment after the recess.

“In principle, Parliament understands the substance of the complaints presented in recent weeks,” he said.

According to him, the government movement temporarily closed the entire process and activities of nickel mining in the right of Raja ampat to avoid the potential for damage in the region.

“We also support the minister’s planned visit and the ranks of ESDM to the field, to ensure that all mining activities are completely in accordance with the required AMDAL rules,” he added.

Previously, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, emphasized that PT Gag Nickel operation licenses were published since 2017, long before he served as a minister of the cabinet in the government.

However, it will still take firm measures against mines that are considered violating the provisions and endangering the regional ecosystem.

“They temporarily stop the operation until field verification,” Bahlil said at a press conference at the Office of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Yakarta, last Thursday. (Ant)
