Momentum setting Indonesian mining governance

Yakarta, Viva – Member of the Indonesian Parliament of the Gackar Party faction, Nurul Arifin, thanked the decisive steps of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Pabowo Subánto and the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia that revoked four mining commercial licenses (IUP) of the mining companies in the Raja ampat Southwest.

He considered the revocation of the 4 IUP as proof that the State was in favor of the interests of the community, especially those in the Raja AMPPA region.

“We greatly appreciate the decision of President Pabowo and the Minister of Energy Resources and Minerals Bahlil Lahadalia, related to the revocation of the licenses of four mining companies in Raja Amppat. This shows the alignment of the State towards environmental preservation and the protection of the rights of the indigenous community in a very ecologically sensitive region,” Nurul said in his statement on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.

“We hope that the impact caused by the mine can be controlled and managed well, so that the results of nickel mining in Gag Island really provide the highest benefits for the prosperity of people,” he said.

He also emphasized the importance of rehabilitation and reforestation as part of environmental responsibility.

“The old mining land must be rehabilitated regularly. Reforestation with local species is important to restore the ecological functions of the forest. This must be an absolute requirement to maintain environmental sustainability,” he said.

On the other hand, Nurul declared that the community must participate in the entire planning and supervision process of mining activities.

“This community participation is important. They must be involved from the beginning and they are given concrete benefits of the mine through compensation, employment opportunities and a sustainable corporate social responsibility program (” he said.

He continued, the decision to revoke the IUP by the Government became an important sign that economic growth and environmental protection must work online.

“This is an impulse to improve mining governance in Indonesia. We must ensure that each natural resources policy is in favor of people, nature and future generations,” he emphasized.

He previously reported, the government revoked the mining (IUP) business license of four companies operating in the Raja Ampat area, Southwest Papua. However, there is a mining company, PT Gag Nickel, it is still allowed to operate.

Meanwhile, the four companies whose permits were revoked, namely, PT Anugeh Surya Pratama, PT Nurham, PT Kawei Sejahtera Mining and PT Mulia Raymond Perkasa.

The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, explained that President Pabowo Subianto had ordered to supervise the operation of PT GAG, despite the fact that the company’s contract (KK) was not revoked.

“Although PT ga is not revoked, but we are at the order of the president, we are observing specifically in its implementation,” Bahlil said in the presidential office, the Complex of the Presidential Palace, Yakarta, on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.

President Prabowo also ordered to supervise the analysis of the environmental impact (AMDAL) and the recovery process carried out by PT GAG. In addition, PT GAG operations are also prohibited from damaging coral reef in Raja ampat.

“Therefore, the AMDALNYA must be tight, the recovery must be tightened, coral reefs should not be damaged, so we are really monitoring matters in Raja ampat,” he concluded.
