The Nintendo Switch 2 has had quite an April. From controversies regarding pricing to insane hype over titles like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Mario Kart World to having their whole rollout impacted by Donald Trump’s tariffs: the Switch 2 has seen it all.

Now, you can go ahead and add another piece of lore to the list now that Japanese pre-orders have “far exceeded [Nintendo’s] expectations,” resulting in the company having to make a public statement. Nintendo detailed the current situation and how they plan to accommodate that massive demand ahead of the Switch 2’s release date. Here is what they said about the Japanese pre-order market and more.

With the Switch 2 on the way, here’s the series I want to see return this console generation.

Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders hit 2.2 million in Japan, so what next?

On Wednesday (April 24th), Nintendo took to X/Twitter to reveal that pre-orders in their home country had hit 2.2 million, which is fantastic! Or it should have been. The gaming company asserted that the incredible demand was more than they had initially anticipated from the My Nintendo Store.

In fact, they claimed to have received “an extremely large number of applications” and couldn’t deliver that many Switch 2s through the My Nintendo Store. However, they have devised a new method to ensure that the company can deliver the goods to their Japanese customers.

Still, there may be some hiccups due to popular demand and asserted that they are “further strengthening our production system” to meet the overwhelming demand.

“In order to avoid the trouble of those who were not selected in the first lottery sale having to reapply, My Nintendo Store will automatically carry over those who were not selected in the first lottery sale to the second lottery sale,” the statement read. “In addition, starting tomorrow, April 24th, game retailers and online stores nationwide will begin accepting pre-orders or lottery sales for the Nintendo Switch 2 console. The console will also continue to be sold at the My Nintendo Store after the release date. With the cooperation of retailers, we will continue to ship the console and make efforts to get as many Nintendo Switch 2 consoles as possible into your hands. We plan to continue producing and shipping a considerable number of Nintendo Switch 2 units in the future.”

Now, it should be noted that this statement was just directed at Japan. This statement didn’t consider the rest of Nintendo’s global market, such as the United States and Canada. It’s unclear how many pre-orders will be placed in the States and how the Japanese company would make a plan B or even a plan C for potential shortages or overwhelming demand outside of Japan.
