If you’re paying attention to the video game industry, you know there’s always a good crop of video games to be excited about each new month. For the upcoming month of May 2025, there’s a massive release that many people, including me, are excited about. But it’s not the only significant release of the month, so I put together this list of the games I’m most excited about over the month.

Shotgun Cop Man
May 1, 2025 – PC, Nintendo Switch
One of my favorite games from Steam Next Fest, I was elated when I found out that the full release for Shotgun Cop Man wasn’t very far off. You’re likely reading this at a time when it’s already out and available on PC and Nintendo Switch. If you like platformers and 2D-action games, and don’t mind a game that looks like it’ll have its fair share of absurdity, then you should be checking out Shotgun Cop Man.
You can even still play the demo that was made available during Next Fest if you want to give it a try before jumping into the whole game. From the developers of My Friend Pedro, DeadToast Entertainment, Shotgun Cop Man looks to be the kind of game that wants to feel good to play, and tell a few crude jokes along the way. That’s something I can get behind.

Despelote
May 1, 2025 – PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One
Another game I got excited about during Steam Next Fest, despelote is a game I’m excited for based on entirely opposite reasons compared to Shotgun Cop Man. While Shotgun Cop Man is all about making gameplay feel good, despelote is all about the narrative and telling a strong story.
The core gameplay, which is first-person soccer gameplay scattered across more narrative-focused moments still feels good, per the Next Fest demo, but it’s the story that really pulls me towards this game. Everything I’ve seen about this game points to it being an incredibly emotional story, and I hope that when I dive into the full game when May begins that my intuition is right.

To a T
May 28, 2025 – PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One
To a T is not your typical game, and that’s exactly why it intrigues me. If someone told you about a game where you’re constantly T-posing, they’d probably think it was a bug. But in To a T, it’s a feature, and a charming one at that.
It’s another game that intrigues me because of its story and its visuals, and because Wattam and Katamari creator Keita Takahashi is behind it. There are certain creators that you pay attention to, when they’re making a new game, and Takahashi is one of those creators.

The Midnight Walk
May 8, 2025 – PS5, PS VR2, PC
You might feel there’s a bit of a trend here in me being excited for a number of games that have a narrative focus, but the feature image gives away that the whole list isn’t entirely like that. But before I get to that final entry, The Midnight Walk continues the trend of a narrative-focused game that has my eye, not just because of its story and visuals.
It’s also a horror game, which is a genre I’m always looking at for new games to play, and even better is that it’s available on PS VR2, which has become a new favorite way for me to play horror games. The art style looks incredible, and even if you don’t have a VR headset, it still looks like it’ll be a very atmospheric game that draws you deeper into its world the more you play.

DOOM: The Dark Ages
May 15, 2025 – PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC
Standing next to Shotgun Cop Man as the only other game on here that has me excited from a gameplay-first perspective, DOOM: The Dark Ages looks like an amazing follow-up to DOOM: Eternal, a game I loved for its intricate and fast-paced combat. The ‘DOOM dance’ that id Software has created with these recent DOOM games is one that I could keep dancing for years, and The Dark Ages looks to be a whole new version of the dance to learn.
Above all, it looks like it’ll be a stellar action game that will do its best to bring more new ideas to a storied series that fit right into the world of DOOM. I’m talking, of course, of additions like being able to jump on a dragon and fly around. Why not? If it means I can rip and tear in new ways, I’m up for it. Admittedly, I’m not to jazzed about how it looks clear that there will be more of a narrative focus this time around, I could care less about DOOM’s story, personally, but that’s a minor gripe since it’s no skin off my back to just skip a cutscene or grab some snacks if any of them are unskippable.

These are just the five games that I’m excited about, but they’re not the only five games to be excited about in May 2025. And there’s always the chance that something could be shadow-dropped, like April’s surprise inclusion of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.
