One of the best aspects of PC gaming is how creative and comprehensive the modding scene is. Entire games can be refreshed and even reimagined when enough work is put into them. Skyblivion is one such project, aiming to enhance the original Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion with updated graphics and mechanics in Skyrim’s engine. However, when screenshots of the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remaster were leaked, and Bethesda then confirmed that it was real and available to play, some feared it could mean the end of Skyblivion. Luckily, that is not the case, as Bethesda told the modding team they have “no intention” of shutting down the fan-made project.

I’m glad we finally got the Oblivion remaster

So far, 2025 has been a rocky year for PC gamers. Despite all the fanfare surrounding the new RTX 5000 series, Nvidia’s latest GPU generation delivered mediocre results even with ray tracing enabled. Although indie titles like R.E.P.O. are faring pretty well, the triple-A titles haven’t been very exciting. Monster Hunter Wilds couldn’t hit the same highs as World, and I don’t even have to go over everything wrong with Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Nevertheless, Bethesda shadow-dropping The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is a welcome surprise. While I haven’t played it yet, the positive reviews have got my gaming spirit hyped, and I can’t wait to try it out in a couple of days.

Bethesda won’t shutter Skyblivion mod

After the official live stream, many Skyblivion fans reached out to the modding team expressing concern this could mean the end of the mod. Skyblivion’s X account replied to someone who posted how nice it was that the Elder Scrolls fan base was being treated to two new versions of Oblivion, agreeing with them and clarifying that Bethesda did reach out to confirm that they don’t intend to shut down the project.

Bethesda gifted the entire modding team game keys

Not only will Bethesda not be taking any kind of action against the Skyblivion team, they actually reached out and gifted them all Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered game keys. The official X account revealed this after thanking them for their support.

Though some companies take immediate action against modding teams, Bethesda has a history of being incredibly nurturing of them and regularly highlight them. In fact, if you visit their official website, they have exclusive sections dedicated to mods for a number of their games.

It’s an exciting time to be an Elder Scrolls fan. Within the span of one week, we’ve gotten an entirely reimagined Oblivion game, as well as word from one of the most passionate modding teams out there that Bethesda wholly supports them, providing us with two incredible ways to play Oblivion. If you’ve ever been tempted to try it in the past, now is the time, especially if you have Game Pass, since you can play the new release for “free” through it.

Other Bethesda games with official mod support
