Creating a functional and inspiring home office is crucial for effective remote work or focused personal projects. When I set out to build mine, I had a general idea of what I wanted, but of course, the journey wasn’t without its missteps. Looking back at my own home office build, there are definitely things I’d approach differently next time.

Would prefer a standard 16:9 monitor
Over an ultrawide one
Since gaming isn’t part of my daily routine, and my work primarily involves tasks like writing, research, document editing, and occasional video calls, the advantages of an ultrawide screen become less compelling.
Firstly, developers often favor a 16:9 aspect ratio for application optimization. Most software I use, from word processors and spreadsheets to web browsers and communication tools, is designed with a standard aspect ratio in mind. Also, vertical screen real estate is often more valuable for productivity. Many of my tasks, such as writing long documents, browsing lengthy web pages, or reviewing code, benefit significantly from having more vertical space.
While ultrawide monitors certainly have their advantages, particularly in specific use cases like gaming and video editing timelines, my focus on general productivity tasks makes the standard 16:9 aspect ratio more practical.

Ample budget for ergonomic accessories
Won’t settle for affordable options
In my initial setup, I prioritized aesthetics and settled for a fancy chair and desk. Looking back, this was a short-sighted decision that ultimately impacted my comfort and productivity. The poorly positioned monitor strained my neck and eyes. The lack of a proper wrist rest contributed to discomfort during long typing sessions.
When I build my home office again from scratch, I will surely prioritize ergonomics and allocate more budget to such accessories. I will focus on a high-quality ergonomic chair that delivers features like adjustable lumbar support, seat depth and height, armrest adjustability (height, width, and pivot), and breathable materials. Similarly, I will invest in a height-adjustable desk, ergonomic peripherals such as a comfortable keyboard and mouse, and a footrest.

Strategic outlet placement
Will avoid unnecessary cords
My first home office build definitely suffered from a messy outlet placement. When I build my home office again, strategic outlet placement will be a top priority to minimize clutter and ensure a clean, safe, and efficient workspace.
I will map out my ideal workspace layout in detail before any electrical work begins. This includes the exact placement of my desk, monitor, lighting fixtures, printer, speakers, and any other accessories I anticipate using. I will also place multiple outlets within easy reach of my primary workstation. Instead of relying on a single or double outlet behind the desk, I’ll consider installing a quad outlet or even two double outlets in accessible locations.

Storage and organization from day one
Plan for smart storage solutions
I initially thought that a standard cabinet with four drawers would be sufficient for my home office. However, I filled them in a couple of months. I heavily underestimated my storage requirements. In my future home office build, I will plan smart and ample storage solutions and integrate them into the design from the very beginning, rather than being an afterthought.
I aim to invest in smart and well-planned storage solutions that support my productivity and well-being in the long run.

Prioritizing natural light and views
Avoid dark and uninspiring corners
In my current home office, I somewhat underestimated the impact of natural light and a pleasant view on my mood and focus. I often found myself working under artificial light, even during daylight hours, and facing a rather uninspiring wall.
In my home office makeover, prioritizing natural light and views will be a central part of the design. I will select the room or area that offers the most access to natural light. Besides, I aim to optimize the placement of my desk to take full advantage of the natural light and any available views.

Skip unnecessary and fancy accessories
Your home office is better without them
My first home office was packed with several unnecessary items. The first one is a monitor light bar. While they promise to reduce eye strain and illuminate the workspace, I found that a well-positioned desk lamp achieves a similar result without adding extra clutter.
Similarly, a dedicated microphone is an accessory I can likely skip. For the majority of my online meetings and occasional voice recordings, my high-quality noise-canceling headphones with a built-in microphone does the job just fine. I can also omit dedicated external speakers, plants, and other irrelevant items and use this budget to purchase high-quality ergonomic accessories.
