Nintendo’s Switch 2 launch may be plagued with shortages. Nintendeal reported on Monday (April 14) that United States GameStop stores are expecting less than 100 Switch 2 consoles per store. But that’s not all; the source close to the outlet asserted that Nintendo Switch 2 “games and accessories will be extremely limited” in an already challenging market.

Nintendo’s Switch 2 Release Is In Jeopardy
Nintendo previously took precautions against scalpers and a possible shortage of consoles by announcing their loyalty preorder program.
“Invitation emails will be prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis,” Nintendo shared in a press release on the official website. “To registrants who have purchased a Nintendo Switch Online membership with a minimum of 12 months of paid membership and a minimum of 50 total gameplay hours, as of April 2, 2025.”
However, regardless of the contingency plans and foresight, a lack of resources will still manage to impact the Switch 2 release on June 5th, 2025.
Along with a potential shortage of accessories and physical games, the Switch 2 has been plagued with various controversies, including its staggering retail price. After the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct in early April, the Japanese gaming company revealed the prices for the console and Mario Kart World, with both being more than what fans had initially anticipated. Nintendo’s top brass would argue that the prices of both the new system and games deserved the price tag but insisted that prices would vary depending on the game.

“What I would say is that we just look at each individual game, and we look at the content and the value of that game, and then we say, ‘What is the right price for the value of this entertainment?'” Bill Trinen, Vice President of Product and Player Experience, told IGN during an April 7, 2025 interview. “What I would probably counter to some of that is that really what you’re looking at is for the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. That’s the physical price for somebody that has not bought the base game.”
As for why they decided that the Nintendo Switch 2 would be priced at $449.00, Trinen expressed that the “cost of everything goes up over time.”
“I think any time you’re building a new system that’s got new features and new tech, there’s costs associated with that. So again, we look at what is the experience on Nintendo Switch? What’s the experience on Nintendo Switch 2? What are the new features that it offers? And certainly, there’s the cost of goods and things that factor into that, but we try to find the right appropriate price for a product based on that,” he explained.
Between a controversial price point and a potential shortage of Switch 2 consoles and accessories, Nintendo can’t catch a break in the days leading up to June 5th. Let’s hope things begin to turn in their favor in the next month—for our sake.
